Our Story

Ullr Labs began while Bob, a recovering software executive with a major skiing addiction, was playing with a Theodolite app on his iPhone. He had the brilliant (in his mind anyway) idea of using the built-in camera, gps, gyroscope, touch-screen and communications features to easily record and share weather & snow conditions in near-real time.

With no software development skills, Bob needed a partner. He connected with Scott, a software development team leader, glacier guide, hard core skier and creator of Powder Alarm, through a thread on the Teton Gravity Research Forums. Scott’s love of snow sports and incredible technical skills were perfect for this project.

Living 200 miles apart, Scott and Bob began a tawdry cyber-relationship, collaborating for four months before meeting face-to-face… 30 minutes before presenting their prototype to the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center.  Mark Moore, then Director of NWAC, liked the idea and introduced the pair to the other regional avalanche center directors.

With the advice and encouragement of these great people, Ullr’s Mobile Avalanche Safety Tools was born in November 2011 to great reviews.  Since then, they have broadened their offering to the Android platform and made a number of improvements based on user feedback.
